Literacy Volunteers of Aroostook County provides free, confidential services to
any Aroostook County adult with the desire to increase their literacy skill.
LITERACY BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPOINT NEW EXCUTIVE DIRECTOR
Literacy Volunteers of Aroostook, Board of Directors President, Teri Morse, recently announced on behalf of the board, Barbara Sutton has been named as the new Executive Director. Barbara brings a long and distinguished career in adult education and public service to the literacy volunteer organization.
For over 15 years, Barbara worked as an Adult Education Program Director in Arizona. In aaddition, Barbara worked as a Program Manager and Tutor Trainer for many years with Volunteer Literacy in Arizona. Working with volunteer tutors has great meaning to her. Barbara believes that volunteer literacy is the most effective way to meet the needs of new readers and adult learners. During her years of literacy work Barbara has worked with community programs, family literacy, probation and homeless education.
Barbara will be working closely with the adult education community in Aroostook County, to champion the cause of the literacy volunteer organization of providing free and confidential teaching to any adult, on any learning level who desires to increase their literacy skills.
Since joining LVA, Barbara has been invited to participate on the National Accreditation Review panel where she will assist in the review of literacy programs for national accreditation through ProLiteracy America. Barbara recently completed training and is now a Certified Manager in Program Improvement with the National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium and ProLiteracy America.
Barbara and her family moved from Arizona to Houlton last year when her husband was transferred with the Border Patrol. They truly enjoy Maine’s way of life and have enjoyed getting to know the area. LVA is sponsoring two tutor trainings in Houlton April 12 and 13 and then again April 19 and 20th. We will also be hosting a training in September in Frenchville.
